What we do

Tactical Tech strives to empower non-profits across the Global South – in particular human rights defenders and rights advocates – helping them carry out their vital work to the best of their abilities, by enabling them to make the most out of new information and communications technologies.

We are working to meet the technology needs of non-profits by:

  • Bringing together international experts on the use of mobile phones for advocacy and developing a toolkit of software and materials, with a focus on Africa and Asia
  • Driving the testing and development of free and open source video tools for documentation and outreach
  • Establishing a network of international human rights digital security experts and trainers, further developing a digital security toolkit in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian
  • Increasing digital security and privacy awareness and related skills for over 1000 advocates and independent journalists worldwide
  • Increasing freedom of expression in the Middle East through access to citizen journalism tools in regional languages
  • Providing youth in poor communities in Brazil with content creation tools in their own language
  • Distributing a peer-reviewed set of tools for running a small to medium non-profit
  • Facilitating the seeding of a pan-African 'localisation' network, translating software into African languages

We are working to facilitate the work of rights advocates by:

  • Strengthening the information and communications skills of the Burmese movement
  • Enhancing the information handling skills of advocates in Russia
  • Researching the role technology can play in emerging issues related to human migration
  • Developing the technology skills of sex worker rights advocates, enabling them to better coordinate their constituencies and record human rights abuses against them
  • Advising HIV/AIDS budgetary monitoring and access to treatment groups in Asia and Africa on e-advocacy
  • Hosting workshops and producing a handbook of tactics to develop the skill-base of rights advocates to use 'information-activism' as an advocacy tactic
  • Helping campaigners tell complex stories in a simple compelling snapshot using information-design
  • Exploring how mapping can be used to effectively document, track and represent issues.
